Athena's Ghost?

Last night I gathered up a load of freshly washed laundry to take to my room upstairs for sorting etc. As I approached the stairs a cat zoomed right by my right side, and DISAPPEARED into the window seat under the large picture window in our living room.

I haven't seen her since her death over two years ago. It must've been a shadow.

"Another cat? Perhaps. For love there is also a season; its seeds must be resown. But a family cat is not replaceable like a wornout coat or a set of tires. Each new kitten becomes its own cat, and none is repeated. I am four cats old, measuring out my life in friends that have succeeded but not replaced one another." - Irving Townsend

My first three Siamese are all gone after long happy lives. But still I think of them all the time. Yes, indeed it must have been her shadow.

I grew up with a mixed terrier, he was my childhood dog. When I turned 19 he was nearly as old as I was. His health failed and one afternoon he slipped silently away. I still cry when I think of him. But, months late I could still hear the click click click of his toenails on the kitchen floor. I think he stayed until he knew he could safely leave me until we meet again at the Rainbow Bridge.

"We who choose to surround ourselves with lives even more temporary than our own, live within a fragile circle, easily and often breached. Unable to accept its awful gaps, we still would live no other way. We cherish memory as the only certain immortality, never fully understanding the necessary plan."
~Irving Townsend
